Lubicon Territory

We are the citizens of the Lubicon Lake Nation. | We were put on our territory in order to protect it. We are engaged in a battle to ensure that our land and peoples are protected, healthy and thriving. Our spirits are unbroken. Our territory is unceded. Welcome to our land.

The Land Invaded

The Lubicon Lake Nation traditional territory has been, quite literally, invaded. | This takes place in the guise of "development" from outside parties with no vested interest in the health of our peoples, Nation or land.
We, the Lubicon Lake Nation, are a distinct Indigenous Nation  with a well-defined traditional Territory in what some people now think of as north-central Alberta. We were hunting, fishing and trapping on our Territory long before the creation of Canada and continue to live on our traditional territory today in accordance with our sovereignty and laws.

Our Nation never surrendered or ceded our land.  Therefore, our Chief, Elders' Council and Elected Councillors ensure that we maintain jurisdiction over all governance matters within the Territory.  Despite this, for the past 25 years the province of Alberta has granted oil and gas licenses to companies who have exploited our resources and our Territory without consulting us first.

The ensuing damage to our land, our traditional hunting, fishing and trapping economies, our health and our way of life has been devastating. National and international support has not moved the government of Canada to act in a fair and reasonable manner.

Today we are not just fighting a legal battle for recognition of our sovereignty or our land; we are “fighting for life itself, for all of Creation, for the animals and the plants, the air and the water."

This is our story. Thank you for listening.
